Instead of a generic store-bought card this Valentine's Day, consider making one by hand. A DIY card carries more personal meaning and can be easily adapted to suit the recipient. Plus, with the right method, the cost is minimal—an appealing prospect.
One option is pin-prick art, a Victorian craft that became popular in the United Kingdom in the 1880s. The technique involves piercing paper with pins to form textured patterns, and it was traditionally used for Christmas cards with elaborate borders. Today, paper crafters apply pin-prick cards to birthdays, Mother's Day, and Valentine's Day as well.
We've given pin-prick designs a romantic interpretation with an original Valentine's Day pattern and a free printable template so you can make it at home. Just scale the image to fit your card stock, print it, and start pricking. Be careful with your fingers while working with this pretty but sharp technique.

How to Make Pin-Prick Valentines
1. Prepare the template
If you haven't already, print the design. Adjust the scale to match your card; you may need a few test prints to get the size right. The paper type doesn't matter for printing the template—you could even use a sheet of scrap paper and print on the blank side.
After printing, cut out the design. Use a few pieces of washi tape to attach it to the front of the card.

2. Prick the pattern
Place a piece of scrap foam or cork underneath as a base. With a thumbtack, poke holes along the lines. Try to space the holes evenly for a neat finished look. Again, watch your fingers!

Carefully peel off the tape and remove the pattern. You've now made a charming Victorian-inspired card.

3. Customize as desired
For a romantic touch, add a personalized message in the center of the heart. This optional step suits more advanced crafters, as it requires extra work. We chose a simple, sweet message of love. Write the words in pencil, prick the card as before, then erase the pencil marks.

You can also stitch part of the design with embroidery thread. This adds color and personalization. For our card, we stitched the birds, heart, and leaves.

To make the rest of the pin-prick design stand out, add a sheet of bright card stock to the inside of the card. Use a glue stick or double-sided tape to attach it. Then you can write on the card stock and fill the inside with romantic words.
